What I think Log Sample Ch. 1-3
I like the way that Elizabeth George Speare writes. I appreciate all of her similes and
metaphors. She often compares her
characters to animals. For example, Malthace is described as going up the side like a mountain goat (p. 17) or Ebol
vanishing like a lizard into the jagged crevices. (p. 16) I like the metaphors and similes because it
helps me picture what the action is.
My favourite character in the book so far is Samson. I like Samson because he has a bit of a
backstory and he is mysterious. We know
he has lashes on his back and he’s a slave and we wonder if he’s a mute. I feel like he is going to be important in the
book because Elizabeth George Speare talks about him a lot. I feel like Samson is a benefit to the camp
because he provides lots of water and firewood. (p. 29) I like how it described how Samson moved the
boulder like a pebble after five men tried.
I think it’s weird that Samson follows Daniel around (p. 34) because for
me it would be kind of annoying someone following me around like a dog.
I like the setting of the story. I would like to live in a cave like Rosh and
his band. I don’t like being crowded
around by lots of buildings. The freedom
that Rosh and his band have is enviable.
On p. 2 it describes the view that Joel and Thace see from the
mountaintop – I like views like this too.
I feel that Rosh is good.
I feel like Rosh would be the kind of guy I would look up to because he’s
very strong and powerful man, who is loud. On p. 29 it says that Rosh is used to seeing
men jump when he gives an order. He is a good leader because he shows
confidence and he is dependable and a challenge solver. I look up to Rosh because he has an awesome
beard. I think that his men look up to
him even though he is so tough and he has a reputation. But he’s kind to them and he has a strong hate for the Romans.
Joel and Daniel think that Rosh is going to drive out the Romans – we see
this when Joel meet Rosh for the first time as his hero. (p. 20-21)
Dear Mr.Kok,
ReplyDeleteI agree with you in many different ways. I also think Elizabeth George Speare is a great author, the way she writes is very unique and makes the story easier to understand and picture the story. You gave some very good examples like the one on page 16 when Ebol vanishes into the mountain crevices like a lizard. My favourite character in the book is also Samson, I think what I like about him the most is his mysterious personality. I agree that the author talks about him a lot and that you added that you think he might be important later on. In the third paragraph you talk about the setting of the story. I like living in the city because everything is close to you and you are more likely to have sewage and cell phone reception. I also like to be in the country because it is quiet and you don't have to worry about disturbing your neighbours.

Dear Mr. Kok,
ReplyDeleteI agree with you with all of the points that you listed. I think that Elizabeth George is a good writer to because she uses good words to describe people, a example would be on pg. 17. My favourite character is Samson also because he is very mysterious, and I also think he is going to be very important later on in the book. I don't know if I would want to live in the country because I like being close to my family and friends, my second reason is that I like hearing noises outside, I don't really like it if it is really quiet. I think that Rosh is a good leader because just like you said he is dependable, confidant and a challenge solver. Three other ways I would describe him are brave, loyal and honest.

ReplyDeleteI agree with Colton on how the author, Elizabeth George Speare, is very good at making it easy to understand and how she puts lots of good detail in to it, and I love that. I'm looking forward to finding out what Samson's story is and if he'll be an important person in it. But my favourite character in the book so far is Rosh. I think he's an excellent leader and friend. I really like his warrior personality and his ability to get followers. I also what his future will be and what decisions he will make. I love this novel so far and i'm really excited to read the rest.

Dear Mr. Kok,
ReplyDeleteThe log you wrote was great and very easy to agree to for me. For example I enjoyed how you also like that Elizabeth George likes to play with words in similes and metaphors. Then after you even gave a page reference to how
she describes characters as animals.
I love how you gave description to why Samson is your favourite character, how he looks and you made an assumption on thinking he will be an important part of the story.
When you said "I think it would be annoying if someone would follow me around like a dog" did you take that from experience?
I like the setting of the story too because sometimes I just want to be alone not around buildings because most of the time it can be relieving.

ReplyDeleteI agree with what you said about the setting of the story I also do not like to be crowded in the city. The only view you have in the city is trees and buildings. I like how the author describes the breath taking view.
I wish I knew witch mountain top they were on?

ReplyDeleteI like the way Elizabeth George Speare writes about people moving in different ways like animals, like on pg. 17 when Melthace runs up the side like a mountain goat. I enjoy the way you worded the paragraph about Samson, paragraph 2. Though I must say my favourite character in the book so far isn't Samson but Simon the Zealot. I like Simon because he's so persuading to Daniel, but also cross with Rosh in a way that almost seems humourus. I am quite double-sided for either living in the country or the city. In the country it would be nice to have lots of space, but you wouldn't be able to just walk to the store and grab a bag of milk. In the city it's loud and noisy, but I agree with Mayke on saying that your friends and family are closer. I think this novel is very interesting and I can't wait to read further.

I like the way that Elizabeth George Speare writes about Samson. He is a mysterious tall, strong guy that no one doesnt really know anything about. he doesnt really have a back story becides being a slave. He has also been a huge help; moving a boulder that 5 men couldn't move exc. What im wondering about is how he is going to respond to Daniel leaving, and what the other guys are going to do to him when Daniel is gone. I cant wait to see what happens next.

ReplyDeleteI really like this blog and I agree with most of it. I also really enjoy Elizabeth George Spear's writing. It is very creative and unique. It also helps create a better picture in your mind for how the characters acted. She is defintely a very good, descriptive writer.
I think my favourite character might be Joel bar Hezron because he is an eager, determined, fun person. He hates the Romans and his dream is to meet Rosh and fight with him. I felt happy for him when he did meet Rosh. I can relate to Joel when I've never got to do something before and when I get to do it, I get really excited! (like my first time skiing) Joel wants to fight but he is also really caring when he decides he needs to go home to his family instead following his dream. I really do like Samson too though and I want to figure out his background story and mystery.
I agree with you about how you don't like being crowded around a lot of buildings but I wouldn't want to live in cave. In my opinion, I would rather live in a house than with Rosh in the cave.
I've enjoyed these last chapters of The Bronze Bow, and I'm excited to keep reading!

ReplyDeleteI agree with Jeremy that Elizabeth is very descriptive when she described how the characters which i think is very detailed. I would say that my favourite character would be Joel Bar Hezron because he's responsible, stubborn, and isn't afraid to stand up to people. I also like Samson because hes strong, very helpful, and deserves better then to be joked at. I love the story so far and I am eager to read further and i wonder if Joel will join the band with Rosh and the others one day.

ReplyDeleteI love Elizabeth George Speare as an author i think she is very creative and so unique in her word choice. She really sets an image in my mind with what the charters, setting and things look like. She describes things so well you can sometimes get caught up in the book. I love how you mentioned how she uses animals to get us a picture in our head i think that is really cool.
Samson is for sure one of my favourite characters. He reminds me of myself a bit tall and not really knowing whats going on a little bit dumb. I think he is a great help to the men and to Rosh. I liked how you reflected to Daniel and Samson about how he follows Daniel around like a dog. I thought that in the book that was kind of funny how he literally had to yell at him like he was a dog. Samson is for sure my favourite character.
I agree and disagree about the city and the cave. For me i love to interact with people and learn new things about them. But i also love to be by myself in a cave like area like Rosh and his men. I think everyone needs a little alone time now and then. I disagree though with being free in a cave, country, alone pace etc. I think you can also be free in the city and still have a ton of fun.
I feel that for me i can reflect from Rosh. In my life i see many leaders around me. My Parents, pastor, teachers and many others. Rosh is dependable, strong, and courages.
Thanks for sharing! Learning lots of new thing!

Mr. Kok,
ReplyDeleteI agree with what you said about Rosh being confident and tough. I feel like Rosh is the type of guy that if you've never met him before he would be hard to read and tell if he is acting serious or not. I wonder how Rosh would act like around Jesus? Since he acts so tough and confident around his band. I also agree with what you said about the way Elizabeth George Spear writes. When she writes that way I find it easier to picture the story in my mind.
-Marlee V.
Mr. Kok,
ReplyDeleteI liked how you described your ideas clearly so anyone who has read the book can understand them.
-Emily
Mr. Kok,
ReplyDeleteI agree with you, Elizabeth George Speare is an incredible author and her vocabulary is amazing. She makes her books easy to understand yet her books are still very powerful. It amazes me how she can paint such a clear picture in your mind. I also like how she gradually gives you information and every chapter gives you more clues to what will happen next. She is extremely well at giving you the personalities of the characters. I wonder what part Samson will play in this book?

ReplyDeleteI like how you describe Samson because he is such an un known charcter
